Prof Michael Loy received his BSc and PhD degrees from the University of California at Berkeley in 1966 and 1971 respectively. He was at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Laboratory from 1971 to 1993, where he was a Senior Manager in the Physical Sciences Department. He joined HKUST in 1993 as Professor of Physics and served as Department Head of Physics 1997-98, Dean of Science from 1998 to 2004. He served again as Acting Dean of Science from 2010 to 2011 and Acting Head of Division of Life Science from 2010 to 2012. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
Professor Loy’s main research interests included nonlinear optical propagation effects, two-photon coherent transients, nonlinear optical studies of surfaces and ultrafast dynamics induced by femtosecond laser pulses, and quantum optics. Since 2012, he has been leading an interdisciplinary project on super-resolution imaging for biological applications, with faculty members from the Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry and Division of Life Science working together as a team. The project aims to achieve resolution down to the 20 nm range, a factor of 10 better than 200 nm, which is the current limit for optical microscopy. Since many intracellular organelles are in the range below 100nm, this is of great interests to researchers in Life Science. |
