Research Highlights
Center for Metamaterials Research
The Center for Metamaterials Research was established to pursue research in wave functional materials. HKUST researchers have the capability to conceive and design new materials, implement these ideas and fabricate the new materials in-house.  The Center's research activities are mainly supported by an Areas of Excellence (AoE) grant from the Hong Kong Research Grant Council.

Mission
  • To become a premier research center in the area of wave functional material research.
  • To facilitate collaboration with other institutions.
  • To support and coordinate research projects related to the RGC Area of Excellence grant supporting research in wave functional materials.

Objectives
  • To design, fabricate and test new artificial materials which are engineered to have properties that are not found in nature and have capabilities beyond normal materials.
  • To conceive and realize new ideas of wave/material interactions which can bring some future technologies one step closer to reality.

Research areas
  • Metamaterials
  • Photonic and phononic crystals
  • Plasmonics
  • Light manipulation of matter
