Professor Gyu-Boong Jo obtained the BS degree in physics and mathematics from the Seoul National University in 2003, and continued his PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was awarded the Samsung graduate fellowship in 2004-2009. After his PhD completed in 2010, he worked as a postdoc at UC Berkeley before he joined the physics department at HKUST as an assistant professor. He received the Outstanding Young Researcher Award by the Association of Korean Physicist in America in 2013, the Croucher Innovation Award in 2016 and the school of science research award in 2019.

Prof. Jo’s  group currently utilizes atomic quantum simulators and explores the interface between AMO physics, condensed-matter and quantum information science. His team aims to create and understand many-body quantum phenomena in various dimensions, topology and lattice geometries with different symmetries and interactions.  For this purpose, the group routinely lowers the temperature of the atomic gas down to nano-kelvin near the absolute zero where new quantum states of matter such as Bose-Einstein condensate and High-Tc superconductivity are expected.
